We recently sampled the Jamie’s Evening Favourites Menu at our local Cardiff Jamie’s Italian. It’s available from 6pm Monday to Thursday – £18.95 for three courses.
Mulling over the menu with a refreshing beer and a Jamie’s Mojito, £7.25 (Bacardi Costa Blanca rum and Martini Bianco with lime juice and sugar syrup, topped with Prosecco) we thought the menu offered a varied choice of dishes, and looked good value too.
I went for the Mushroom Fritti starter – King oyster and Paris brown mushrooms coated in herby breadcrumbs and served with garlic mayo. The mayo was great, but I found the mushrooms and their coating a tad oily for my taste, especially when they’d cooled down slightly. My other half opted for a fresh and refreshing Primavera Bruschetta with lemony courgettes, peas, beans, hazelnut and lovage pesto and Bella Lodi.
My main course was a pleasing (if not very prettily plated up) salad of heritage tomatoes, whipped ricotta, toasted pine nuts, wild rocket and Lowestoft hot-smoked salmon. All was fresh and tasty though it was padded out with too many herby croutons which weren’t quite as crisp as I normally like. My partner enjoyed a Prawn Linguine with Langoustine tails , fennel, tomatoes, chilli and saffron.
For dessert I devoured a velvety organic yoghurt panna cotta with a tangy blackcurrant and limoncello compote dotted with crunchy spiced crumble. Alistair chose the Vin Santo Tiramisu which he reckoned was almost as good as his own homemade version.
The service and atmosphere in the restaurant was cheerful, friendly and relaxed and we’ll definitely come back again soon. Apparently the menu is changing imminently, so we look forward to seeing how that squares up.
We were invited to review the menu as guests of the restaurant, but all views are our own.
