It’s no surprise to me that a new YouGov and Villas.com survey has found that more than half of parents say their kids wouldn’t be able to go cold turkey from tech when on holiday.
Anyone with a teen knows it’s nigh-on impossible to manhandle a mobile phone from their Rottweiler-like grip when it’s buzzing notifications on a non-stop loop.
So taking them away to a cottage in the country, in the middle of nowhere, to wean them off wi-fi sounds a definite formula for failure. Bored wouldn’t even come into it. Downright fury might.
Unless, that is, the location has something extra to offer. Think swimming pools, great cycling routes or gyms on site…(and even a town or city close by, too..)
With that in mind, Villas.com (Booking.com’s dedicated vacation rental booking site) has come up with some get away from it all, tranquil ‘back-to-nature’ locations which also have plenty of activities on offer. Here are some (peaceful) locations that may persuade your teens to ditch their devices.
(Oh, and most have free wi-fi, too, so good luck with that ‘cold turkey’ business…)
Middlewick Holiday Cottages, Glastonbury
Price: around £140 per night
Set in the heart of the South West, Middlewick Holiday Cottages offer bike hire plus an indoor pool for rainy days. And Bristol, Bath and Cardiff are also within easy reach if you crave some retail therapy.
Tyne Hill Barn, Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire
Price: around £125 per night
There’s plenty to keep everyone active at this semi-detached holiday home – an outdoor pool and tennis courts on the property, and a golf course a couple of km away. Stratford-upon-Avon is just over 14 miles down the road too.
Swansea Valley Holiday Cottages, Cilybebyll, Pontardawe, Wales
Price: around £127.74 per night
There’s lots of golfing and cycling (including great mountain biking routes) easily accessible from these cottages which have lovely outdoor dining areas with BBQ so you can enjoy river views over dinner. The seaside city of Swansea is about 9 miles away.
Thurnham Hall apartments, Cockerham, Lake District
Price: around £140 a night
Packed with facilities, Thurnham Hall is a playground for all ages. There’s an onsite bar, fitness centre, indoor pool, hot tub, pool table and pingpong, plus Lancaster close by and the fun of the fair at Blackpool about 15 miles away.
Prices are for nights through the summer season.
